Granite, Marble, and Stone Countertops
Using natural stone for your >, VA area countertops ensures that you will get many years of service from this beautiful material. A little care and simple maintenance will keep stone looking its best for years. Granite is usually treated with permanent high solids and penetrating sealer to prevent water absorption during installation. The initial application will last for up to five years after which it needs to be reapplied. The reapplication process is quite simple and can be done on your own if you don’t wish to hire a professional.
If you’re not operating on a shoestring budget and you want a countertop that looks elegant and will last for ages, marble is the ideal choice for you. However marble requires that you care for it properly in order for it to look its best. Marble is not affected by heat, but is susceptible to stains and is porous. It needs to be treated with a special stone sealer that will reduce its porosity, and this will prevent water from penetrating the surface. You must make it a point to wipe up wine, fruit juice and other acidic food spills to prevent staining.
Soapstone is non porous which means that leaks and spills on your countertops will remain on the surface and not penetrate deep down onto the material. For best results, apply a coating of mineral oil to soapstone to help protect it further from acid and stain attacks.
